VIN Limits for Ross-Tech VCDS
Q. What is a VIN?
A. VIN stands for Vehicle Identification Number.
Q. What is the VIN limit?
A. Each vehicle sold in the UK has a unique VIN so you can think of the VIN limit as Car limit. The Ross-Tech VCDS interfaces are available in Enthusiast and Professional versions. The Enthusiast versions are limited to 3 or 10 different VINs (cars), and the Professional versions are unlimited, so have no VIN (car) limit
Q. Which functions use up a VIN slot?
A1. These do NOT. Autoscan, Fault code Reading, Fault Code Clearing and Viewing Live Data. This means you can read and clear codes or view live data on an unlimited number of cars
A2. These DO. Resetting service lights, Adaptation, Basic Settings, Coding / Installation list, Login or Security Access, Output Tests etc
Q. I have a workshop. Which version do I need?
A. You’ll need the Professional version with unlimited VINs
Q. I am a professional technician and works on many cars. Which version do I need?
A. You’ll need the Professional version with unlimited VINs>
Q. I have two cars. Which version do I need?
A. You need the Enthusiast 3 VIN version. With your two cars, you’ll still have one free VIN slot for future use
Q. I have four cars. Which version do I need?
A. You need the Enthusiast 10 VIN version. With your four cars, you’ll still have six free VIN slots for future use
Q. I have 11 friends with cars and we're buying this together. Which version do I need?
A. You’ll need the Professional version with unlimited VINs
Q. Does resetting the service reminder again on the same car use another VIN?
A. No, only different cars will use up a fresh VIN slot. Once a car is stored in a VIN slot, you can do all functions without any restrictions and it will not use any more VIN slots
Q. Can I remove a VIN to make room for another car?
A, No, once a VIN is stored it cannot be removed, but if you run out of VIN slots, you can easily upgrade the interface from 3 to 10, or from 10 to Professional level with unlimited VINs online (note there is a charge which is currently $169 for 3 to 10, and $169 for 10 to unlimited).
Q. I want to read or clear the codes on a friend’s car, but don’t want to use a VIN slot
A. No problem. Reading or Clearing fault codes and viewing live data do not use up a VIN slot no matter how many cars you do it on
Q. Can I see how many VIN slots are used?
A. Yes. Click [About] in the VCDS software to see the remaining free slots
Q. Can a VIN be accidentally added to my list?
A. No. The VCDS software makes it very clear if a VIN will be added before you do it
Q. I lent my VCDS to someone and now it has their VIN number stored. Can I remove it?
A, No, once a VIN is stored it cannot be removed
